There are many things that can go wrong with your HTML email once it arrives at your subscriber’s inbox. As there are no standard guidelines for HTML Email design, the chances are that your email will look like it was chewed by a dog before it arrived in Outlook. For this reason you must always test your emails in the most popular email clients and ISPs (Outlook, Lotus Notes, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, GMX.de, Apple Mail etc.).
Or alternatively you can rely on the industry professionals to do it for you.
There are many free HTML email templates out there, unfortunately most of them look like they have been built before email was invented.

MailChimp also offers a free version of HighImpactEmail. It is a library of HTML Email Templates. It comes with 350 holiday template pack. A total download of 300MB. Personally, for what it is, I find it very chunky. Also a free registration with Mailchimp is required. Find it here.
Free Templates that work are great, however if you need a more professional looking template for a low price ThemeForrest is the place you want to be. More than 80 Beautiful email templates and most of them are for under $15. (Thanks Tamara Gielen for discovering it).
